Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for a more equitable world lives on in annual days of service. This year, Kaiser Permanente Diablo employees and physicians had the chance to make a difference in our own backyard by volunteering to build affordable housing at Esperanza Place in Walnut Creek.
Now a Habitat for Humanity construction site, Esperanza Place will soon be home to 42 families earning low-to-moderate incomes. The time and talents of community volunteers and future homeowners help to make it all possible.
On a chilly Saturday morning, Kaiser Permanente Diablo volunteers arrived to keep the project moving forward. After weeks of storms and rain, there was plenty of clean-up needed to get the site back in action. Volunteers also laid roof shingles, prepared for drywall and framed out the second floor of one of the buildings.
Ross Kwok, vice president and IT business information officer, shared his experience of the day, “This event reminds me why I joined Kaiser, which is the value in what we do for the communities we serve. We used to live a few blocks from here, so being able to do something for the communities we live in is very, very special.”
