Every day, Esperanza Place looks more like a community. As frames fill in and become rooms, the look of the project becomes apparent. These structures will soon become homes that fill with dinner parties, playdates and birthday celebrations. They will be the backdrop for the lives of real people. Michael is one such person—a bonafide family man ready to call Esperanza Place home.
Fortunately for his fellow Esperanza Place homeowners, Michael has begun fostering community on-site. He has invested hundreds of hours on the construction site, befriending Habitat staff and volunteers and getting to know his future neighbors. A natural people person, Michael is already breathing life into the community.
Everyone who meets Michael immediately recognizes his generosity of spirit. Though he will soon be the one living among the walls rising at Esperanza Place, Michael sees a lot more than just his future home. “It’s all about the kids. This isn’t really for me,” he remarked. “If I’m lucky, I might live in the house for 20, 25 years. But this is for my family, something that is theirs. This could help send my grandchildren to college.”
Michael knows he will put down roots in a close-knit community and enjoy short morning walks to get coffee in the neighborhood. He knows Esperanza Place promises a peaceful, stable home that he looks forward to filling with simple, sturdy furniture. But as he watches foundations being poured and rooftops being built, what Michael anticipates most is what Esperanza Place will mean for his family’s future.
